Demonstrating software to clients is easy. Implementing it successfully is not. HammerTech shares the experiences of one of our clients, Hamilton Marino Builders, regarding the ‘real’ challenges and benefits associated with implementing HammerTech.

Case Study: Candece Frazzica Kara (QOHSE Manager, Hamilton Marino Builders)

The construction industry has long been renowned as lagging behind other industries regarding the uptake of technology. The McKinsey Global Institute Industry digitization index (based on 2015 or latest available data) shows the construction industry is amongst the least digitized, surpassed only by Agriculture and hunting. Buildings themselves are technological marvels that incorporate material technology (structural systems, glazing), ICT systems, electrical and mechanical solutions, and building automation. So what is it about the construction process that is inhibiting the take up of technology. Is it the nature of the workforce (that may not have had exposure to technology), the nature of the industry (it’s always been done this way), or perhaps there are not the appropriate tools to enable the uptake of such technology. Whilst there are a myriad of technical papers on this subject, we thought we would take some time with Candece Frazzica Kara, QOHSE Manager for Hamilton Marino Builders (HMB) to get the thoughts from an industry practitioner on the challenges / benefits on new technology.

Candece is responsible for QOHSE for HMB in Victoria. Tasked with managing up to 10-18 projects at any point in time, Candece views innovation and adoption of new technologies as ‘no-brainers’ if the benefits outweigh the cost and time associated with implementation.  

There are challenges associated with implementing any new technology solutions into a business. Candece shares the key elements required that gives the implementation the best opportunity for success:

MANAGING CHANGE

Lots of people don’t like change and will provide resistance if they are not comfortable with what is being introduced. Therefore it is critical to get buy in from the team. Also, by assigning roles and responsibilities regarding how the system will be used, this drives team accountability and reliance on each other to ensure they have fulfilled their role. It also helps build relationships within the site team as they are able to support the less tech savvy staff, which helps increase their confidence and capability resulting in a greater uptake.

COMMUNICATION

It is important to set up a communication protocol (ie. what items should be dealt with internally, and which ones should be directly with the software provider). This also involves creating ‘champions’ in the process so learning is shared and you don’t have people raising the same issue on multiple occasions.   

BENEFITS

Whilst it is not a simple task, Candece believes the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Some of these include:

  • Real time information / data accessible via any device at any time.
  • Better control of information management. There is no opportunity for people to use different versions of documents, and changes can be pushed in real-time instantaneously.
  • Removing the need for paper.
  • Time saving for the site team means they are spending more time supervising in the field, yet quality of administration has improved significantly.
  • Archiving data / project information that is easily searchable replaces the need to archive hard copies of documents and makes finding records so much simpler.
  • ‘Ultimately, there isn’t one particular part of HammerTech that benefits us more than the other, it’s the whole package. It covers everything we need to do’.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE THINKING OF GOING DOWN THIS PATH

  • Select a positive team that will embrace the change for the initial implementation;
  • Don’t implement midway through a project where the team in under project pressures. It just adds another thing to their workload which may have an adverse impact on the implementation.
  • Having redundancy in the team (ie champion) that can assist with training. Having internal training resources is important to a successful implementation.
